Sphinn from Danny Sullivan

tagged , , , , , , , , , and

Sphinn … it's all the buzz today and I'm reading about it everwhere I go to catch up on today's latest and greatest.

According to Linda Buquet at 5 Star, latest and greatest is an appropriate phrase to use when describing Sphinn.

If you are into SEO, PPC and Internet Marketing you just may want to take "Sphinn" for a SPIN. (That's the pronunciation BTW.)

Many are saying this will replace the now defunct Threadwatch, but with all the social functionality this site has, I say it will far surpass it.

I was wondering what Danny Sullivan was up to these days and now, I get this awesome surprise from the master of webology.

Danny brings us all up todate on his SearchEngineland Blog with the new changes and other changes coming in the near future.

When Search Engine Land launched last December, I talked about liking the name in part because it sounded like "a community, where people can meet, talk, discuss and network." I promised to upgrade the site to help a community thrive. It took much longer than the original "month or so" I envisioned to make this happen. But today, we're happy to unveil our new social site, Sphinn.

And what specifically is Sphinn?

Sphinn is a social site for search and interactive marketers. It's designed to allow you to share and discover news stories, read and take part in discussions, discover events of interest and network with others.

Now what Marketer in their right mind wouldn't like the sound of that?! Hey Linda, thanks for the ping on Sphinn. I'm really looking forward to watching this grow.

Pondering Matt Cutts

tagged , , , , , , , , , , and

You know back in January there were rumors afoot that Matt Cutts was inimating that he might be ready to try something different. Something other than being the poster boy of Google and the search engine optimization (SEO) community.

I was this quote from Matt's blog that raised the eyebrows…

"I love working at Google, but at some point my wife is going to wake up and smell the coffee. She’ll say 'Hey, we agreed we’d try this Google thing for four or five years, and then I’d get to pick what to do next. It’s been like eight years now! When do we move on to our next adventure?'"

But it's a month later and I haven't heard any more on this topic, and that's a good thing. Matt Cutts is all about ethical SEO methods, and he tries to make sure that search engine spammers aren't the ones getting the good results in Google. Although Matt and the BlackHat community hold a mutual respect for each other I think … at least, it seems that way to me.

Matt works for the quality group of Google, specializing in SEO issues. He is one of the co-inventors listed upon one of the most well-known patent filings from Google: "Information retrieval based on historical data". He wrote SafeSearch, Google's family filter. He was the first to publicly propose to use historical web site information to identify link spam.

Matt Cutt's blog is the semi-offical source for upcoming Google ranking updates. So, many of us are glad Matt's around to answer questions and give guidance. It's nice to have a guy who knows what he's talking about at the keyboard.

PayPerPost Gets Segmentation

tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , and

You can now target your PayPerPost (PPP) campaigns based on Google PR, Alexa score and topic and domain.

It's getting a lot of thumbs up from the advertisers. Honestly, I like it, but not sure if they will be able to pull it off or not. I recently ran an ad with PayPerPost where I was very detailed about what I wanted, but still a very easy post to make for the publishers. I guess because I was so specific I didn't get even one taker.

I chalked it up being a little more focused on who I wanted posts from. Like I wouldn't accept any MySpace and I wanted PR3 or higher. I asked for the bloggers to some how be related to the niche I was campaigning for. So basically, I'd already narrowed myself … and for that, I got zip.

My guess is that the publishers will need to get educated and come around to what the advertisers want if they want to get paid for posting. Otherwise, it's best to just enjoy your blog and forget the PPP aspect. PayPerPost's move towards segmentation is a clue that the blog advertising market is heading in a new direction.

Performancing Goes PayPerPost

tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , and

PayPerPost announces the purchase of Performancing, and Performancing announces their partial acquisition by PayPerPost. All these bits and parts add up to a lot of pieces that when put together will make PayPerPost a much stronger company. The paid to post blogging model of advertising is proving to be an amazing way of spreading the word about … well, about anything and everything. It’s no wonder that PayPerPost is stretching it’s reach to include much of Performancing.

So, what parts didn’t PayPerPost buy?

According to Nick Wilson of Performancing, the purchase does not include their Partners Ad Network, nor their PFF.

What it does include is the Performancing Metric technology, the domain name Performancing.com, and the Performancing Exchange technologies.

The chat amongst the blogging community is mixed as always. It’s controversy and we bloggers live for these moments. Some are delighted that PPP will now have the type of metrics that will afford them huge amounts of blog statistics, and that’s what Marketing professionals live for. Others see any chumming by Performancing with PPP to be beyond their grasp to comprehend. But when the dust settles, what we now know as Performancing will be moving over to PPP. PayPerPost’s bloggers will now be able to track visitor stats and monitor AdSense auditing for their blogs.

The parts of Performancing not sold will find a new domain and brand identity … also something Marketing professionals live for.

Let’s face it guys, the landscape of blog advertising has changed forever. The world of professional blogging has just expanded by another 28,000 bloggers.

800 Numbers Free To Bloggers

tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , and

I received a challenge, a paid challenge no less, from TollFreeNumbers.com to try out their services and review their website on our blog. I don’t normally take up such challenges, but they gave us a free toll free number too and well, when they said they’d backlink back to the Affiliate Guild … that’s too good to pass up.TollFreeNumbers.com finds businesses Toll Free 800 Numbers and even tries to find them numbers that spell out words. My challenge was to find myself an 800 number using their online lookup tools system and then, activate it.Toll Free numbers valid in the U.S. and Canada onlyIn using the TollFreeNumbers lookup tool, I found it to be easy to use and quick to respond (I’m on DSL). After the first four attempts to find a phone number, it prompted me to email me some other possibilities for the names I’d chosen.

Where I got a little confused was how do I get one of those long numbers that says it all like the ones in thier testimonials? So, I clicked the “tips” button on the lookup tool.

What I found was a nice creative suggestions page, and what I didn’t know is that you’re not limited to seven digits. Well, you are, but the advice is to think longer if need be. The person calling your 800 number will push in all the needed numbers and few more … the result will be the same … your 800 line will ring!

I spent about an hour of my time playing with different word combinations to match the overall theme of my businesses and the one I decided upon was 888-SEO-WRITER … that pretty much sums up what I do for a living really. I writer highly targeted content for affiliate niche websites, blogs and more. Need a writer? Now, you can contact me!

You can get a free eBook from them too called Phone Numbers That Make Money.

Ted’s Got Goods

tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , and

Ted wanted me to tell that he’s giving away a few new 6 mega pixel digital cameras and photo printers that Hewlett Packard just happened to give to him … well, actually, I made Ted slip me a few bucks to share his news with you, meaning HP sponsored this post. Hey, even Affiliate Bloggers gotta pay the rent!Anyhow, Ted’s going to be giving these digital cameras and photo printers away as part of a whacky promotional Hp is doing to increase consumer awareness for the HP products and their HP Digital Camera buying guide informational pages.

Ted’s asked for bloggers specifically to tell him, in their most whacked out versions, why they deserve to own one of these digital products. So, you’re going to be seeing a lot of bloggers posting about Ted, his contest  and the HP digital give-aways.

Apparently Ted’s already given away one digital camera to a sobbing woman named Tamale. I think if my name was Tamale I’d be pretty tearful too! He left it for her on her desk, which makes me wonder if maybe Ted didn’t do that because he’s the reason she’s sobbing in the first place. We’re on to you Ted!

I popped on over to the HP Digital Camera buying guide pages to have look at their information on digital cameras. I’ve actually been shopping for digital cameras this year, so I can say that the information there was very helpful.

They’ve got some tips on better photo taking and how to print better photos. That’s all good stuff for a novice like me.

You guys know that HP has an affiliate program too right? Through Commission Junction’s affiliate network.

Apparently HP won “Best Computer Retailer Web Site” in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005. In addition, they also took Internet Retailer Magazine’s award for “Top 50 Retail Site” in 2003 and 2006. That’s good marketing information if you want to be an affiliate for these folks. I’m sure Ted would approve!

Okay, Ted … there’s your 5 minutes of fame on the Affiliate Blogger … Merry Christmas dude!

Reminders Calendar Helps Affiliates

tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , and

American Greetings has come out with a new product for their affiliates to market. It’s an online calendar system that helps the user to remember important dates … dates that they might want to send an email greeting for.

The online calendar is a free service provided to their customers as an added value. Promotional services like that are always helpful to affiliates looking for new marketing angles.

And, one feature that I thought was very cool was that the calendar can send you reminders by text messaging your cell phone. No more forgetting birthdays, anniversaries, and special days. I don’t about you, but that free service would help keep me out of trouble!

The AmericanGreetings.com affiliate program pays a nice 40%-60% commission rate payout for every new subscription. The parent company also owns BlueMountain.com, which is where I have my account, and they offer a combined affiliate program. So, you can promote both services and get paid as one combined affiliate program. That means payouts more often for the affiliates!

Nice Coupon Site

tagged , , , , , , , , , and

Affiliates thinking about working with the coupon type of affiliate marketing should take a look at this nice affiliate coupon site called www.couponchief.com.

I’m big on Apple products lately, so I was enticed by the link to their Apple listings and coupons … especially the engraving part.

I like how they broke apart the featured coupons from the hot deals. It real has appeal for different types of buyers.

The site clearly displace their terms of service and privacy statement, which is a must and something a lot of affiliates over look. Me included sometimes!

The other thing that’s nice about this site is that I can search by merchant or by category … meaning they have a quick-glance navigation on the sidebar. It really is a very simple design and easy to navigate site that most any affiliate could model their coupon site after.

Perfect Affiliate

tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , and

Debra Rabin has written a new article for AffiliateClassroom that outlines the features of the Perfect Affiliate.

Some of the qualities discussed in the article include profitability, an eye for success, research, relationships and communications … amoung other attributes.

It’s a good read and represents the point-of-view of the Merchant. Affiliates might get a better understanding of what the Merchants wants in their relationship with you. I think any time, the two sides can get a better understanding of each other, the better this business is. Feel free to add your thoughts on it too!

Looks Like Me

tagged , , , , , , and

ringtones

Check it out here

I managed to create an image using U-Doo that looks somewhat like me in a matter of a few minutes. Now, if I wanted to startup this service to have an avatar character that looks kind of like me pop up on my friend’s cellphones, I’d just active the image I’ve created and then email everyone a copy of it for their cell phones. I can even custonize my own ringtone for them as well.

This looks like it’s from the same folks who do SitePals. There’s no affiliate program on here yet, but you guys should nudge them in that direction. This is a hot new toy for ringtone affiliates to take a look at.

Tagged From 5 Stars

tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , and

I’m SO tagged!

I didn’t even see it coming … suddenly there she was! Linda Buquet with that smile of hers, politely pinging me to let me know that I should consider myself tagged. Wicked wench! LOL

So, here’s the deal. There’s a tag game going around where bloggers have to share five things about themselves that most readers wouldn’t know, and then tag five other bloggers mercilessly.

5 Things You Didn’t Know About Bobbie Grennier

1) Like Linda Buquet, my dad wanted to name me Linda Loo after his favorite gravel truck too! Thankfully the buoy industry was doing better than gravel that year, and so “Bob”-bie was the agreed upon name.

2) I’m very allergic to all alcohol. I love the taste of beer, so besides being a big bummer, it also makes attending affiliate events not so much fun as the others guys seem to be having.

3) I used to be a school teacher and I love helping people learn new things, but you probably know that last bit since I created the Affiliate Guild to help affiliates learn the ropes.

4) If you phone me you’re very likely to hear birdies chriping and doggies barking from time to time. I’ve got a full on zoo in my office and feeding the animals is required … Starbucks for their trainer.

5) I live near the coastal redwoods of California, so my favorite past time is hiking in the woods. I never weary of just how special and beautiful these giant trees are.

Here are my blog tag predecessors. I was tagged by Linda Buquet who was tagged by Anik Singal who was tagged by Rosalind Gardner, who was tagged by Jeremy Palmer, who was tagged by Scott Jangro.

Now I’m passing the torch to Ros Phillips of LinkConnector, Arlene & James Martell of Affiliate Bootcamp, Tom Avery of RevenueSource Affiliate Forums, Stephen Ralph of Top-Affiliate.com and Marifer Vergara from the queenofcheap.com.

Full Disclosure - The Full Montey

tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , and

I was reading a very interesting article on TechCrunch tonight and thought it was news worthy, and when I saw that PayPerPost was offering me a few bucks to chat about this article that didn’t hurt either. Always nice to get paid for chatting about things I enjoy chatting about. The article is titled “PayPerPost Does Something Right” and it’s referring to the PayPerPost blog. The article is leaking the news that this coming Monday, PayPerPost will be making a significant policy change … and according to Michael Arrington it’s a positive change.

Even more so, I whole heartedly agree with the soon to be announced change.

As of Monday, bloggers who write for PayPerPost will be required to disclose that they are being paid for their posts.

I’ve started to blog about this topic a little when I wrote A Few Posts Here and There, and not because I knew change was coming. I didn’t. I think it’s the ethical thing to do. I think that when a blogger is earning some income through using their posts to feature advertisers, then they should disclose it. We’re kind of the Paul Harvey’s of the blogging world if we don’t make that distinction.

This move by PayPerPost is most likely related to the FTC’s moves to force disclosure of word-of-mouth advertisements.

I actually think a Disclosure Policy is and should be in the making for every blog that runs advertisements on them … and I mean every blog.
