Full Disclosure - The Full Montey

I was reading a very interesting article on TechCrunch tonight and thought it was news worthy, and when I saw that PayPerPost was offering me a few bucks to chat about this article that didn’t hurt either. Always nice to get paid for chatting about things I enjoy chatting about. The article is titled “PayPerPost Does Something Right” and it’s referring to the PayPerPost blog. The article is leaking the news that this coming Monday, PayPerPost will be making a significant policy change … and according to Michael Arrington it’s a positive change.

Even more so, I whole heartedly agree with the soon to be announced change.

As of Monday, bloggers who write for PayPerPost will be required to disclose that they are being paid for their posts.

I’ve started to blog about this topic a little when I wrote A Few Posts Here and There, and not because I knew change was coming. I didn’t. I think it’s the ethical thing to do. I think that when a blogger is earning some income through using their posts to feature advertisers, then they should disclose it. We’re kind of the Paul Harvey’s of the blogging world if we don’t make that distinction.

This move by PayPerPost is most likely related to the FTC’s moves to force disclosure of word-of-mouth advertisements.

I actually think a Disclosure Policy is and should be in the making for every blog that runs advertisements on them … and I mean every blog.

Going Full Montey

As some of you know the FTC has made moves to force disclosure of word-of-mouth advertisements. This namely affects bloggers, newletters, ezines and discussion groups … places online where there is a mix of word-of-mouth communication and advertisiments.

I’ve been blogging a little about it myself, and getting paid to do it too I will gladly say.

Here are the links to my posts on this topic: A Few Posts Here and There and
Full Disclosure - Full Montey.

Not every post I make on this particular blog is a paid post, only a few are. But, I think it’s fair and ethical to develop a page dedicated to a Disclosure Policy.

On Monday, there’s going to be a lot of announcements about Disclosure Policies and so, I thought I’d help out the Affiliate Guild and 5 Star folks who might be affected by the FTC’s changes.

A new website has been created to help you develop your own Disclosure Policy and I highly recommend you go there and get your Disclosure Policy done and posted as soon as possible. The advertisers will be requiring it becuase the FTC will require them to only do business will those who disclosed the they are being paid.

Some of you might know who Paul Harvey is. He’s an longtime radio personality. If you’ve ever listened to his show, it’s really hard to tell where his news starts and where his ads take over. He presents ads in the same tone and along side the news. It’s very confusing to people listening to his show.

Bloggers and others, who are paid for their word-of-mouth ads are confusing to their readers … when is it a post that’s paid and when is it not.

We don’t want to be the Paul Harvey’s of the Internet.

There’s nothing wrong with paid ads, and there’s nothing wrong with disclosing that they are paid ads or that your site is running paid ads.

Model Ship Building

Here’s a nice niche on building a ship model and well, all sorts of other models as well.I came across theoldgiftshop.com, and once again there’s no affiliate program for us to take advantage of.

I’m just going to keep pointing these niches out and hope that there are some affiliate sales teams reading my blog and looking for leads.

This site has some very upscale museum type models for the choosing, and I think the website itself could easily increase their profit margin by about 20% if they added an affiliate program to their bag of tricks.

Affiliates, when you see a niche you want to explore, you know you can go talk to the merchants too!

Gift Card Swaping

What a freaking great idea for an online business Swapagift.com has come up with.Just when you thought you’d seen it all, here is a new business that allows and encourages you to sell or swap unwanted and unused gift cards.

Oh yeah, you know all those people who couldn’t be bothered to take the time to buy you a proper Christmas present, but instead grab a gift card for an iPod tunes download while they’re standing in line at the grocery store … and you don’t even own an iPod.

Here’s your saving grace. Offload those what-were-they-thinking gift cards using the Swapagift.com service.

Again, I don’t see an affiliate program on this business yet. But I do have to give them a nod for getting featured on the Good Morning America TV show on ABC.

Gift card swapping … I’m still in shock. Who would have thunk it?!

There a few options for what you can do with you gift card. You can list it and sell it, you can sell it directly to them too, you can sell it through one of their 250 brick and mortar locations, and you can trade cards.

They will also allow you to buy other’s gifts cards at a reduced rate. Wait a minute … those cards are like cash … so that’s like getting more cash in your pocket than if you’d bought the card for yourself originally. I might feel a little eBay trading business coming on here???!!!!

Okay, so if Santa Claus didn’t bring you the gift card that you really wanted this year, you can wander on over to Swapagift.com and trade them for the ones you did want … or something at least, that works better for you.

They have a swappers/buyers protection policy for transactions up to $100 and they guarantee it too. That’s a nice perk!

Anyone want to start a pool on which gift card get the most offers to get swapped?

Stag and Hen Weekends

I just love saying that … Stag and Hen Weekends … sounds absolutely naughty in a woodland creature sort of way.So it’s all about an all girls get away and an all boys get away … and never the two shall meet because … it’s not about meeting others.Boys must be boys and go romp through the great outdoors and do very male things together. While girls must have their princess parties and pajama parties and whatever other themed parties they can come up with.Really, that’s what Stag and Hen Weekends are about, gender specific themed parties and adventurous get togethers. Sounds like a lot of fun to me!

Red Seven Leisure sponsors these events. And again, there’s no affiliate program for these guys … hey, UK affiliate network guys! Call these stags and hens up and get an affiliate program hooked up! This is a great niche and could do really, really well in social networks where people have disposable incomes to go play.

How about a Clay Day? http://www.redsevenleisure.co.uk/packages/index.php?PackageID=597 Nothing says friendship like a little mud under the finger nails, eh?!

Squeezed Fresh Instantly

Are you one of those bloggers that likes to see stats on the success or almost success of your blog’s popularity? Have I got a main squeeze for you!

First, you need an account with Text-Link-Ads.com… so, do that first (a new window will open for you).

Once you get your new account set-up or log-in to your existing account, navigate to the green Make Money button on their page. A drop down menu opens and you want the link called Free Tools.

On the Free Tools page there’s a fun litttle tool called Blog Juice Calculator … click it.

And here’s where the 100% Pulp Fiction begins!

Blog Juice Calculator will show you how well your blog ranks in relation to other blogs of a similar niche. I’ll warn you ahead of time that the Categories are very limited. I’d suggest trying a lot of them to see where you’re stronger.

Now keep in mind, this means stronger based their criteria … but it’s pretty good criteria if I do say so myself.

You can even add a competitor’s blog and run a search … then you’ll see where they are in comparison to you.

It’s also a great way to see what blogs at the top look like … figure how to become one of those top blogs if that’s your goal in life.

Anyhow, a cool tool and well worth the Free price of joining Text-Link-Ads.com.

SEO Writing: Text Links for Better SEO

Let’s talk a little more about using Text Links for better SEO placement becuase it’s a very relevant tool that you have at your disposal and something that you should consider exploring.

Working with text links to help with your SEO rankings is going to involve a good solid chunk of time. So, don’t think that this is an easy solution because it’s not, but it is solid … at least it is for now. Here’s some search term improvement techniques for you to take into account:

1. Link Exchanges

Used to be everyone was exchanging links with anyone else who give them a link. Then Google danced and bamm … doing that will get you lower placement. So, you have to be smart and ONLY exchange links with other domains that are relevant to your site’s topics. Do that and you will see your domain move up the ranks.

2. Billboards

This is something kind of new and is working for now until Google bans the companies offering this service. I’d say use it while it works my friend!

Sites using Billboards are noticing significant rank increases. One site recorded the following…

Over the last 3 months, we have added about 20 unique billboards … We did about 2 per week, and every week we would see position moves of 1 - 2 positions. This is an extremely effective tool because it gives you relevant backlink content on different IP’s. Take the time to write good article/news stories and plug your company or product. This technique will pay off. Don’t believe me? pick an obscure term without competition, and put up 2 - 5 billboards using the term as anchor text through-out your BB’s and you will see position moves within 4 weeks.

The use of Billboards is currently a very good way to get your website relevant positioning in a shorter period of time and you can do so for reasonable fees. You only need to pay for Billboard space on another’s IP for 30 days, by then the search engine will have found you. Make sure the IP is spidered by all the major search engines regularly. After 30 days, you can remove your page and go on to the next IP. Keep doing this and you will build a repository of text rich backlinks to your own domain. Very yummy search engine food!

3. Text Link Advertising

Text link ads are very affordable for those not wanting to dedicate all the time it takes to getting relevant backlinks. Okay, here’s what I think is the best strategy with regards to buying text links. Most likely that PR8 website isn’t going to get you any higher placement than the PR4-PR6 will. That’s my opinion, others will disagree. My own testing is showing Google really doesn’t pay much attention to their own PR system … who knew?!

So, buy links that are PR4-6 and don’t pay over $25 for them … unless of course they happen to be mine … lol. Here again, I’d recommend you use Linkworth and use their set of tools to determine the worth of any link you might be considering … those tools will even help you with domains that aren’t in the Linkworth repository … hint, hint!

These types of one-way links will really help your placement. If you can get one-way links from other sources for free, go for it and make sure they have better PR than you do!

4. Content Development

Well now here’s a novel idea, the more content you ad to your website, then better your rankings will be … and go one step further, you must do so on a consistant basis … like every two weeks ad a new page.

Ad pages with 250-500 words of relevant content and relevant links.

And, this is really important … make sure all your webpages have different content by at least 40%. Google is so smart it actually knows if you’ve got the same page up on the domain … and it knows if you’ve got the same domain mirrored on other domains.  You have to do the work!

5. Menu Structure

Make sure the search engines can easily spider every page on your website. I prefer to hard code all my links … including the domain name info. Taking short-cuts only hurts you.

Make sure you use keywords in your menu links and make sure the search engines can easily follow your links from the top level to the second their third levels.

6. Website SEO

Use the H1, H2 tages and relevant keywords through out the site. Keep keyword density around 2-5% … going over will cause you to drop in the ranks. I speak from experience on that one.

7. Schedule Regular Updates

Like I said, you must consistently add new content to your website  to keep the search engines well feed and happy. You must get down and dirty and do this part, if you don’t … those purchased links aren’t going to help you get all the way there.

8. Hurry Up and Wait

It takes time to make all these things happen and with each step you have to sit back and see what result it had, if good then you step again. It’s like a chess game … really think about your next move and you can get to the top.

And while you’re waiting, put up a page that offers your viewers text links and graphical links back to your website … create a “link to us” page. It’s free! And, if your website is interesting, you’d be surprised how many people will link to you as a result.
